Chicago Cubs by Month-September

September baseball in Cubs history. Hack Wilson continues his assault on the all-time RBI record. A great pennant race in 1908 with the Giants and the Pirates. The curse of the Bambino applies mostly to the Red Sox, but he did a number on the Cubs as well. This time it was beating the Cubs with his arm as a Boston Red Sox. Later he came back as a Yankee and called his shot in another World Series victory over the Cubs.

Here is one game I went to that is one of the most memorable.  Cubs playing the Cardinals in an important 4 game series battling both the Cardinals and Astros for the division  lead.

JD Drew's grand slam gave the Cardinals a 6-0 lead going into the Cubs part of the 6th inning.  Cubs slowly make a great comeback.  In my mind, the big hit was a triple to right center by Mark Grudzielanek.  His RBI tied the game 7-7 and Moises Alou drove in Grudzielanek with the run that made it an 8-7 victory.

I also remember not liking Jim Edmonds much and he struck out to end the game for a Cubs victory.  I recall it being very cold that day, but still a great one!!

September 23, 1908
Ok, the Cubs are notoriuos for curses and bad luck, but in 1908, the Cubs got perhaps,   the biggest lucky break in their team history.

the Cubs, Giants & Pirates were in a very close race for the NL pennant (no 2 leagues in 1908-NL division winner goes to World Series).  At the Polo Grounds, the Cubs take a 1-0 lead when Joe Tinker hits an inside the park home run to give Cubs a 1-0 lead.  Giants score to tie the game and the game heads into the 9th inning.

With 2 outs and runners on first and third, Al Bidwell of the Giants hits an apparant single to centerfield.  The Giants team and fans go crazy as if they've won the game, however the runner at first base, Fred Merkle, a 19 year old rookie apparantly did not touch second base.  Joe tinker retrieves the ball that was still in the outfield and touched second base appealing that the runner did not touch second base.

the league office had to get involved to make a ruling on the game and ruled that the game had to be considered a tie and the game replayed on October 8.  Well, the Cubs & Giants were both 98-55 so the winner of the October 8th game  would go on to the World Series.   the Cubs won the replayed game 4-2 and ended up winning the World Series.
