Chicago Cubs by Month

October 1, 1932
In Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, there were 6 home runs hit in the game, Kiki Cuyler  and Gabby Hartnett homered for the Cubs, Lou Gehrig hit 2 home runs for the Yankees and Babe Ruth hit 2 home runs as well, and one of those home runs, a 5th inning  solo home run to give the Yankees a 5-4 lead that they will not lose on their  way to victory is one of the most controversial and well-known home runs in MLB history, the legend of the “Called Shot” home run. Did Babe Ruth really  call this home run before he hit or not? One of the many things in baseball  history that will be debated for many more years.

The Padres scored 2 runs in the 6th inning to cut the lead to 3-2 and it was the 7th inning that is so well  remembered. Tim Flannery’s ground ball that went through Leon Durham’s legs tied the  game and the Padres went on to score 4 runs in the inning to take a 6-3 lead and go to the 1984 World Series against the Tigers.

October 7, 1989
 Game 3 NLCS
A very tough loss for the Cubs in Game 3 of the NLDS. At Candlestick Park in San Francisco,   the lead changes hands multiple times until the Cubs take the lead in the top of the 7th on Ryne Sandberg’s sacrifice fly scoring Greg Maddux (pinch running for Rick Sutcliffe).   In the bottom of the inning, Robbie Thompson’s 2-run home run off Les Lancaster to give   the Giants a 5-4 they will hold onto to win Game 3. Giants lead Series 2 games to 1.

October 8, 1989
 Game 4 NLCS
Another close game that went back in forth in this exciting NLDS between the Cubs and Giants (even if the final outcome wasn’t that great, Cubs fans!). Greg Maddux struggled again giving up 4 runs in just 3 1/3 innings and Will Clark was right in the middle of the Giant’s offense as he doubles to lead off the 5th inning and scores in front of Matt Williams 2-run home run that proved to be the game winner. The Giants take a 3 games to 1 Series lead with a 6-4 victory at Candlestick Park. Back to Wrigley for Game 5.

October 8, 1945
Game 6 of the 1945 World Series was an exciting one, the Cubs led 7-3 going into the top of the 8th inning when the Tigers scored 4 runs to tie the game. Cubs manager, Charlie Grimm brought in Hank Borowy, who had already started 2 games in the Series and the move paid off as Borowy pitched 4 scoreless innings allowing the Cubs to win the game in the bottom of the 12th inning when Stan Hack hits a walk-off double to drive in pinch runner, Bill Schuster.

October 8, 1929
 Game 1 WS
The World Series has many stories of lesser-known players that have big games. Game 1 of the 1929 World Series is one of those examples. Philadelphia Athletics pitcher, Howard Emhke pitched just 11 games in the 1929 season for the A’s, but pitched very well in Game 1, giving up just one run and striking out 13 Cub batters to give the A’s a 3-1 victory in the first World Series game played at Wrigley Field. October 9, 1989
Game 5 NLCS
In a Series dominated more by hitting than pitching, Game 5 was a very well-pitched game. Rick Reuschel came back from a horrible game 2 (getting knocked on in a 6-run inning for the Cubs) and Mike Bielecki for the Cubs had pitched the game into the 8th inning with a 1-1 tie. Unfortunately, it was Bielecki’s 3 walks to load the bases that set the stage again for Will Clark. Don Zimmer brought in the left-handed pitcher, Mitch Williams to face Clark, but as he did all Series, Will Clark had the big hit, a 2-run single to give the Giants a 3-1 lead. The Cubs made a great attempt in the ninth inning to come back getting 3 straight singles (Curtis Wilkerson, Mitch Webster & Jerome Walton) to cut the lead to 3-2, but Ryne Sandberg grounded out leaving the tying and winning runs on base to end the Cubs season. The Giants win the Series 4 games to 1.

After Cubs win 116 games in regular season, they can't finish the deal as the White Sox defeat the Cubs 7-1 to win the WS 4 games to 2.

Happy birthday to former Cubs closer, Carlos Marmol. A very frustrating guy to watch. Marmol walked a lot of hitters, but he also struck out a lot with a devastating slider. In 2010, he had perhaps the best season for a Cubs relief pitcher saving 38 games with a 2.55 ERA and an amazing 138 strikeouts in just 77 2/3 innings. He pitched for the Cubs from 2006 to 2013.

October 14, 2003
Cubs have a 3-0 lead going into the 8th inning with Mark Prior pitching a strong game and are just 5 outs away from a World Series appearance. The Marlins Luis Castillo has a very long at bat against Prior and one foul ball down the left field line becomes the "Bartman" incident where a fan interfered with Moises Alou's abillity to make the catch. Prior and the Cubs collapsed soon after this incident. A dropped ground ball by Alex Gonzalez and what looked like it should be a double play was also a very big play in an 8-run 8th inning by the Marlins. The Cubs blow a great chance to make it to the World Series. Kerry Wood take the mound in Game 7 the following night.

I know it's difficult to watch this game all over again, but MLB network did a good recap of the game interviewing Marlins manager, Jack McKeon and Cubs shortstop Alex Gonzalez.

October 15, 2003
Game 7 NLCS
After a very difficult loss in Game 6, the Cubs came out with a great effort in game 7, but Kerry Wood did not pitch well giving up 3 run on a Miguel Cabrera home run in 1st inning. But Wood did help the Cubs come back himself when his 2-run home run tied the game at 3-3.

When Moises Alou gave the Cubs a 5-3 lead with a 2-run home run it looked good for the Cubs. But another 3 run inning for the Marlins, capped off by a Derrek Lee RBI single, gave the Marlins a lead they will keep on their way to a 9-6 victory over the Cubs. The Marlins go on to the World Series in a crushing defeat for the Cubs.
