Cubs hire Don Baylor as manager. Baylor has just a 187-220 record as manager of the Cubs over 2 1/2 seasons (2000 to 2002), his best season being 2001 when the Cubs have an 88-74 record but narrowly missing a playoff appearance.

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kerry Wood, who posted a 13-6 record, wins the National League Rookie of the Year Award. Wood held batters to a NL best .196 average and finished third in the league in strikeouts with 233 in just 166 2/3 innings pitched.

A great move by the Cubs picking up Rogers Hornsby from the Boston Braves. Hornsby hits .380 with 39 home runs and 149 RBI helping to lead the 1929 Cubs to the World Series.

Congratulations to Cubs outfielder Jerome Walton as he is voted 1989 National League Rookie of the Year Award. Another Cub, Dwight Smith finshes second. Walton becomes the first Cubs Rookie of the Year since Billy Williams won the award in 1961

Congratulations to Sammy Sosa for being named MVP after his historic home run race with Mark McGwire. Sosa drives in 158 runs with 66 home runs. Mcgwire got the HR record of 70 (later broken by Barry Bonds), but Sosa gets MVP and the Cubs get a playoff appearance.
