Neil Walker hits the second Opening Day grand slam in Pittsburgh Pirates history. Kosuke Fukudome gets 2 hits and a RBI and Starlin Castro gets 3 hits in a Cubs 6-3 loss to the Pirates.

In the Cubs home opener, the team gets home runs from guys who don't hit a lot of HR's, Rey Sanchez and Scott Servais, but the Cubs blow a late lead to the Padres before Mark Grace wins the game with a bases loaded walk-off single in the 10th inning for a 5-4 Cubs victory.

Happy birthday to Jon Lieber.  He is one of two Cubs pitchers to win 20 games in the 2000's (Jake Arrieta in 2015).  

His 4.5 WAR in 1999 is 9th best of any Cubs starting pitcher since 1999 (minimum 162 innings pitched).  Lieber had two other seasons (2000, 2001) with a 4.4 WAR which is tied for 10th with Kyle Hendricks in 2016.

Happy birthday to Cubs pitcher, Jon Lieber (1999-2002, 2008)-He won 20 games and lost just 6 for the 2001 Cubs and led the NL in innings pitched (251) in the year 2000.  He's also a frequent attendee to Cubs Convention in January.

At the time, Eckersley was a starting pitcher, but after joining Oakland

On his first Opening Day after leaving the Cubs as a free agent, Greg Maddux, allows no runs and just five hits to his former team over 8 1/3 innings as the Braves edge the Cubs, 1 - 0.

He's a Cub now, but when Jason Heyward came to the big leagues, his first at bat was against Carlos Zambrano and the Cubs.  What a start, a 3-run home run in his first at bat as the Braves demolish the Cubs 16-5.

Wrigley Field opens the season with a night game for the first time in team history.  The team also unveils their new video boards.   The renovations also had many fans waiting in lines to the restrooms.  I know-I was one of them.  It was also the first opening day at Wrigley after the death of Cubs great Ernie Banks and the team had pictures of Banks all over the bleachers that were being renovated as well. It is also the Cubs debut of free agent pitcher, Jon Lester.  Lester pitched alright, but Cardinals pitcher, Adam Wainwright was better as he shut out the Cubs for a 3-0 Cardinals victory.  Jason Heyward has 3 hits in his Cardinals debut and Matt Holliday drives in 2 runs for the Cardinals.

April 5, 1982

Bump Wills leads off the game for the Cubs with a home run in his first at bat with the Cubs and Keith Moreland homers as well to help the Cubs defeat the Cincinnatti Reds (in Cinncinatti) 3-2 in a game shortened to eight innings due to rain. This was also Ryne Sandberg's debut with the Cubs as he went 0 for 3 in the game and played 3B for the Cubs.

April 5, 1988
In a wild season opener in Atlanta, the Cubs defeat the Braves 10-9, the teams combined for 7 home runs in the game, Jody Davis, Leon Durham and Shawon Dunston homered for the Cubs. The Cubs came from behind to score 2 runs in the ninth inning and won the game in the 13th inning on a sacrifice fly by Manny Trillo

Cubs lose a tough home opener as Ryan Dempster pitches a strong 7 innings, leaving the game with a 1-0 lead. Kerry Wood walks 3 runners including forcing in the tying run in the 8th inning and Carlos Marmol gives up the game-winning single to Ian Desmond as the Nationals defeat the Cubs 2-1.

I've heard of no crying in baseball and I thought there were no ties in baseball also, however this opening day game ended in a 10-10 tie in a game called by darkness at Wrigley Field. An exciting ninth inning as the Cubs trailed 9-6 with 2 outs and no one on base. Ron Santo proceeded to walk, George Altman singled and Ernie Banks tied the game 9-9 with a 3-run homerun. Opening Day at Cubs Park (Wrigley Field) in 1925, was the first WGN radio broadcast of a Cubs game (per SABR Business of Baseball Committe.   Pete Alexander pitches and hits his way to a Cubs victory over the Pirates 8-2 going 3 for 3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.   He pitches a complete game and gives up just 2 earned runs.   Gabby Hartnett also homers for the Cubs.

Dusty Baker brings his #12 back to Wrigley Field as the Cincinnatti Reds manager. Another cubs curse perhaps, his #12 counterpart, Alfonso Soriano pulls up lame on a fly ball and leaves the game. Soriano would return to the Cubs lineup by May 1, however, he was never the type of stolen base threat that he was when the Cubs first signed him.

The Cubs continue a great beginning to the season going 6-1 with a 10 inning 1-0 victory over the Phillies.  Dennis Eckersley pitches all 10 innings for the Cubs giving up just 5 hits, 1 walk and no runs.  In the bottom of the tenth inning, Larry Bowa singles, Chris Speier bunts him to second base and Bob Dernier drives in the lone run of the game and the Cubs walk-off to victory at Wrigley Field.

The Reds score 5 runs in the 6th inning to take a 9-4 lead, but the Cubs come back scoring 1 in the bottom of the sixth inning and 2 runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th.  In the ninth inning, the Cubs win the game with back to back home runs.  Moises Alou's HR ties the game 10-10 and Sammy Sosa's HR Is the walk-off for the 11-10 Cubs win.

Alou's HR was his 2nd of the game and Aramis Ramirez & Todd Hollandsworth also hit HR"s in this game.

The Cubs were leading the Pirates 3-2 going into the 8th inning when this game got out of hand.  Both teams scored 4 runs in the 8th inning and the Pirates tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth inning on a double by Gary Varsho.

It looked as though the Cubs had the victory when Doug Dascenzo gave the Cubs an 8-7 lead with a single and Andre Dawson followed with a Grand Slam to give the Cubs a 12-7 lead, but the Pirates came back and scored six runs in the bottom of the 11th to defeat the Cubs 13-12.  The six run extra inning comeback is the greatest extra-inning comeback in major league history,

Les Lancaster was a top relief pitcher for the Cubs in their 1989 playoff year. He had a 4-2 record with 8 saves and a 1.36 ERA in 1989.

Lon Warneke of the Cubs pitches his second consecutive one-hitter, beating the St. Louis Cardinals and Dizzy Dean, 15 - 2, at Sportsman's Park.

On April 17, 1934, Warneke's 1-hitter against the Reds, the Wrigley Field home opener, was even better as he shut out the Reds and struck out 13 batters in the game.His early season consecutive scoreless inning streak will end on April 27, 1934 when the Cardinals score a run, but Warneke does go 3-0 for the year pitching all 11 innings in a 3-2 win over the Cardinals at Wrigley Field.   Warneke will win 22 games for the
1934 Cubs.

The Chicago Federals of the Federal League play the first game at Weeghman Park (present day Wrigley Field).  the Chi-Feds defeat the Kansas City Packers 9-1.  Claude Hendrix pitched a 5-hitter.

A big game for Hall of Famer, Rogers Hornsby.  With the Cubs trailing in the top of the 3rd inning 5-0, Hornsby hits a 3-run home run to cut the lead to 5-3.  In the 5th inning, he hits another 3-run home run to give the Cubs a 6-5 lead and in the sixth inning, he hits a 2-run home run to give the Cubs a 9-5 lead that the Cubs will not relinquish on their way to a 10-6 Cubs victory at Forbes Field 10-6.

Ouch, Cubs pitcher's walk nine batters in the 5th inning to set a NL record for walks in an inning.   Cubs lose 9-5 to the Reds.

Lee Walls hits three home runs and drives in eight runs as the Cubs rout the Dodgers, 15 - 2, at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Ryne Sandberg's 2nd inning home run cuts the Pirates lead over the Cubs to 3-1.   The home run breaks the major league record for most home runs by a second baseman.  His 267th career home run as a 2B breaks the record previously held by Joe Morgan. 

The Cubs comes from behind to defeat the Pirates 7-6.

The Cubs Hall of Famer had one of the greatest offensive seasons in MLB history in 1930.  His 56 home runs was a NL record until 1997.  His 191 RBI remains an MLB record to this day.

Wrigley Field becomes the first ballpark to install an organ to entertain fans, with Roy Nelson manning the keyboard. But Nelson's successful pregame serenade doesn't help the Chicago Cubs as they fall to
pitcher Max Lanier and the rival St. Louis Cardinals, 6 - 2.

Cubs play Coloroda Rockies for first time and defeat the Rockies 6-03 at Mile High Stadium in Denver.

Happy birthday to Cubs great, Rogers Hornsby. Rogers Hornsby was one of the greatest players in MLB history, but most of his great career was spent with the Cardinals.

But 1929 remains one of the best years in Cubs history primarily because of Hornsby. The Cubs gave up 5 players and $200,000 to acquire Hornsby prior to the 1929 season.  Hornsby hit 39 home runs and drove in 143 and scored an amazing 157 runs. His efforts helped lead the team to a NL title and World Series appearance in 1929.   The Cubs lost this World Series in 5 games to the Philadelphia A's. Hornsby was also the Cubs player manager in 1932 when the Cubs went to another World Series,
losing this one to the Yankees. Hornsby was just a part-time player at this point in his career.

Happy birthday to Cubs pitcher, Aaron Brooks. He was traded to the Cubs for Chris Coghlan when the Cubs brought Dexter Fowler back to the team for 2016.

Cubs win a wild game against the Montreal Expos. Jody Davis hits a Grand Slam in the 4th inning and begins a 5-run 8th inning rally with his 2nd home run off the game off closer, Jeff Reardon. Cubs win the game 12-10 at Wrigley Field.

Greg Maddux & Orel Hersheiser have a pitcher's duel at Wrigley Field.  Maddux wins this one 1-0 giving up just 5 singles to the Dodgers and scores the winning run after he singles and comes home on a triple by Gary Varsho.

Derrek Lee & Corey Patterson have big games for the Cubs vs the Reds at Wrigley Field. Lee's 6th inning 2-run home run makes the score Reds 6 Cubs 4. Lee's 7th inning 3-run home run ties the game for Corey Patterson's walk off home run in the ninth inning off Matt Belisle. Cubs win 8 to 7 as Lee & Patterson drive in all 8 Cubs runs and score 6 of the 8.

Hank Wyse pitches a 1-hit shutout as the Cubs defeat the Pirates 6-0
at Wrigley Field. Wyse won 22 games with a 2.68 ERA for the 1945 Cubs
team, the last team to go to World Series.

Cubs defeat Reds 6-0 as Dickie Noles pitches a one-hit complete game shutout.   Noles walks just 2 batters and faces just 29 batters (2 over the minimum of 27). Eddie Milner, who broke up another Cubs no-hitter, gets the only hit of the game, a single in the 4th inning.
