October  1

October 1, 1932

In Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, there were 6 home runs hit in the game, Kiki Cuyler and Gabby Hartnett homered for the Cubs, Lou Gehrig hit 2 home runs for the Yankees and Babe Ruth hit 2 home runs as well, and one of those home runs, a 5th inning solo home run to give the Yankees a 5-4 lead that they will not lose on their way to victory is one of the most controversial and well-known home runs in MLB history, the legend of the “Called Shot” home run.  Did Babe Ruth really call this home run before he hit or not?  One of the many things in baseball history that will continue to be debated for many years to come.

A pitcher’s duel between the Braves, Tom Glavine and the Cubs, Kevin Tapani has the Cubs with a 1-0 lead going into the ninth inning. But Javy Lopez hits a home run to tie the game at 1-1.  Chipper Jones wins the game in the 10th inning with a walk-off single off the Cubs, Terry Mulholland.

Braves lead the Series 2 games to 0 going back to Wrigley Field for a Greg Maddux vs Kerry Wood matchup.

Game 1 NLDS Wrigley Field
Dodgers 7 Cubs 2

After making a very successful transition from being the Cubs closer to a starting pitcher, Ryan Dempster struggled in Game 1 of the Series. Mark DeRosa got the Cubs off to a good start with a 2-run home run, but in the 5th inning, Dempster walked 3 batters in front of James Loney who cleared the bases with a Grand Slam.

The Dodgers won the game 7-2 to take a 1-0 Series lead. Manny Ramirez hits a memorable home run off Sean Marshall.  You can see him adjust his swing at the last minute to smash a Sean Marshall curveball over the left field wall at Wrigley.

Billy Williams hits his 1st major league home run to give Cubs an 8-5 lead in the 9th inning at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.  Unfortunately, Cubs give up 3 runs in the 9th inning and the Dodgers win the game in the 14th inning 9-8.
