Happy birthday to Jake Arrieta. He's only the 2nd Cubs pitcher (after 1900) to pitch 2 no-hitters for the team (with Ken Holtzman). He was an all-star, silver slugger, and helped the Cubs win the 2016 World Series.
He'll return to the Cubs for the 2021 season.

He became just the 2nd Cubs pitcher in the modern era to throw 2 no-hitters when he shut down the Reds in April. He was named to his 2nd consecutive all-star team and won his first Silver Slugger award as the best hitting pitcher in the National League.

How Does Jake Arrieta compare with other Cubs pitching greats??
Arrieta came to the Cubs in the middle of 2013 in a trade so he spent about 4 1/2 years with the Cubs. I thought I would check to see how both Arrieta and teammate Kyle Hendricks (who joined the Cubs in 2014) compared with other Cubs pitchers in recent times like Fergie Jenkins, Rick Sutcliffe, Greg Maddux and Carlos Zambrano.
Both Arrieta & Hendricks are at a bit of a disadvantage with these Cubs pitchers since taking out pitchers earlier in the game makes gaining more WAR (a cumulative statistic) a little more difficult. Fergie Jenkins had a 30.2 WAR, well above Greg Maddux at 19.9. Carlos Zambrano (18.6) and Jake Arrieta (18.5) are 3rd and 4th. Rick Sutcliffe (15.3) & Kyle Hendricks (15.0) are not far behind.
Overall, I would say that Arrieta was better than Maddux. Maddux's edge in WAR is only 19.9 to 18.5, but Maddux pitched 1143 innings to Arrieta's 751. Arrieta has a better ERA, a much better winning % (68.8 to 54.9%). Arrieta was well about average in ERA+ in each of these five years. Maddux was below average in his first season with the Cubs and was solid in each of the next four years, but not close to Arrieta.
As far as Zambrano goes, Arrieta is just .1 WAR short of him in 200 fewer innings. Like Maddux, Arrieta has the edge in ERA, ERA+ & Winning percentage.
You can try to say that Arrieta was a more dominant pitcher in his time than Fergie Jenkins was, but when you look at the production that Fergie put up, I think it's ridiculous to try to say that Arrieta was better. Check out the numbers and decide for yourself. Even making 1966 his first year with the Cubs when he split time as a starter and relief pitcher, his production is still well above all of the other Cubs pitchers.

He gave up 41 hits. I've calculated his ERA to be .041 and his WHIP was .632. Add in his first 75 innings of 2016 (nearly a full season of 163 innings), and his ERA is .094 with a WHIP of .751.
