Cubs history 1990s

A whole decade worth of 1990s Cubs history in one year, 1998. The season starts out exciting when a flame-throwing 20 year old rookie strikes out 20 Astros early (kerry Wood). The summer is full of an exciting HR chase betweeen Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire and the season ends in a playofff loss to the San Francisco Giants with an amazing hitting display by the respective clubs first baseman, Will Clark and Mark Grace.

1999 November 1 Cubs hire Don Baylor to be their next manager.

1999 October 4 What have you done for me lately, Jim Riggleman who managed the Cubs playoff season of 1998 is fired after a 67-95 season.

1999 September 18 Sammy Sosa becomes the first player in ML history to hit 60 Hr's in consecutive seasons hitting his 60th HR off Jason Bere in a losing effort at Wrigley against the Brewers (7-4 in 14 innings).

1999 August 6 Great ML debut by Andrew Lorraine, a complete game shutout defeating the Astros 6-0 in Wrigley .

1999 June 26 Sammy Sosa hits his 300th career HR.

1998 September 28 Steve Trachsel gets the victory in a play in game for the playoffs agains t the Giants 5-3.

1998 September 23 Call this one a Cubs Curse light, while in the middle of a playoff race, The Cubs blow a 7-0 lead. In the ninth inning with a 7-5 lead, Rod Beck loads the bases and with 2 outs Geoff Jenkins lifts a fly ball into left field that Brant Brown apparantly loses in the sun drops the ball and the Brewers complete the comeback 8-7.

1998 September 12 Sammy Sosa hits his 60th HR of the season. One of only 4 players at the time to accomplish this feat (Ruth, Maris and McGwire).

1998 September 8 Mark McGwire breaks Roger Maris record of 61 HR's with his 62nd HR of the season against Steve Trachsel of the Cubs . The Cardinals win the game 6-2 in St Louis.

1998 September 4 Sammy Sosa breaks Hack Wilson's Cub HR record with his 57th Home Run.

1998 August 26 Kerry Wood strikes out 16 batters in 8 innings to defeat the Reds 9-2 in Cincy.

1998 July 28 Sammy Sosa becomes the first cub to hit a grand slam in consecutive games.

1998 July 27 Sammy Sosa hits his first ML grand slam, a modern day record for the most HR's in a career without hitting a grand slam (247). Sosa also drives in all 6 runs in a 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks

1998 July 6 The Cubs purchase Glenallen Hill from Seattle Mariners

1998 June 30 Sammy Sosa sets a ML record for HR's in a month with 20. The record had been held by Rudy York with 19 in August, 1937

1998 June 14 Brant Brown hits 3 HR's in a 12-5 victory over the Phillies in Wrigley Field.

1998 June 15 Sammy Sosa hits 3 HR's all against Cal Edred leading the Cubs to a 6-5 win over the Brewers in Wrigley Field.

1998 June 5 Cubs play the White Sox for the first time ever in a regular season game at Wrigley and defeat the Sox 6-5 on a walk-off HR by Brant Brown.

1998 June 2 With the 3rd overall pick in the first round of the ML draft, the Cubs select Corey Patterson. Other future ML'ers selected in this draft were Will Ohman in the 8th round and Eric Hinske in the 17th round.

1998 May 6 Kerry Wood in just his 5th major league start strikes out 20 batters in a 2-0 victory over the Astros at Wrigley Field. Wood throws a one-hitter, a Ricky Gutierrez single with the only other baserunner being Craig Biggio who was hit by a pitch.

1998 April 18 Kerry Wood's ML debut is a victory against the Dodgers, 8-1 at Wrigley Field. Wood throws 5 shutout innings.

1998 April 10 New Cubs, Henry Rodriguez goes 5 for 5, including a 3-run HR against the team that just traded him (Expos).

1998 March 31 Henry Rodriguez hits a HR in his first at bat with the Cubs.

1998 January 15 Cubs sign Rod Beck who helps the Cubs get to the 1998 playoffs saving 51 games.

1997 September 21 Ryne Sandberg plays his final game at Wrigley Field He went 2 for 3 in an 11-3 victory over the Phillies.

1997 June 26 Cubs sign Sammy Sosa to an extension that makes him the 3rd highest paid player in baseball behind Barry Bonds and Albert Belle.

1997 June 16 Cubs play White Sox for the first time in regular season defeating the White Sox 8-3 at Comiskey Park.

1997 April 20 In a doubleheader game, the Cubs lose their 14 th consectuve game of the new season and break the losing streak in the 2nd game with a 4-3 victory over the Mets in Shae stadium.

1997 April 16 Cubs lose their 12th consecutive game, losing to the Rockies 4-0 at Wrigley. Breaks NL record for most losses at the beginning of the season.

1997 April 10 Cubs tie a club record for losses at the beginning of a season, losing their 8th consecutive game.

1996 June 18 Brant Brown hits his first 3 HR's of his career in a doubleheader split against the Dodgers at Wrigley Field.
