Cubs history 1960s

Cubs history in the 1960's covered a wide range of emotions. Most of the Cubs teams were very talented teams that did well, but not quite well enough. Some of the greatest players in Cubs history played for the team. These include: Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Fergie Jenkins and Billy Williams. The 1969 Cubs were the team that appeared to have everything to go all the way, but a late season collapse, a black cat and a great New York Mets team got in the way.



1969 April 20 Native Canadian Fergie Jenkins pitches in Canada for the first and gets the win over the Expos in a 6-3 win in the first game of a doubleheader.





1969 April 9 Billy Williams ties a ML record hitting 4 consecutive double sduring an 11-3 win over Phillies.

1969 June 19 Leo Durocher marries Laynn e Walker Goldblatt.

1969 June 26 Ron Santo clicks his heels fo rthe first time.





1969 July 9 Tom Seaver comes up two hitters short of a perfect game, wins the game 4-0 with a one-hitter.

1969 July 8 Cubs lose difficult game 4-3 to Don Young.

1969 July 8 Cubs lose difficult game 4-3 to Don Young.

1969 August 27 Cubs loss to Reds in Wrigley Field, the loss drops Cubs lead over Mets to 2 games.

1969 August 26 Cubs get authorization to print playoff tickets.

1969 August 13 Cubs lead Cardinals by 8 1/2 games and Mets by 9 1/2, their largest division leasd of the year.

1969 August 19 Ken Holtzman no-hitter.

1969 September 14 Lou Brock hits a walk-off HR to defeat the Cubs & Ken Holtzman in St. Louis.

1968 August 21 Billy Williams drives in 9 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Braves in Wrigley Field.

1968 August 26 Ken Holtzman is called to active duty during the Democratic National Party Convention held in Chicago. The Guard was activated after demonstrators protesting the vietnam war clashed with police officers.

1968 September 28 Fergie Jenkins wins 20th game with a 4-3 iwin over Pirates in Wrigley Field.

1967 June 11 Adolpho Phillips hits 4 HR's in a doubleheader

1967 September 29 Fergie Jenkins wins his 20th game of the season with a 4-1 win over Cincy in Cincy.

1966 March 17 Ed Schlensky files a lawsuit against PK Wrigely to have night games at Wrigley Field.

1966 April 21 Cubs trade Bob Buhl and Larry Jackson for Ferguson Jenksin and Adoolopho Phillips.

1966 May 3 Cubs play on Astroturf for the first time losing 10-2 to the Astorros.

1966 May 20 Cubs play Braves in Atlanta for the first time. Losing 12-2 to the Braves.

1966 May 26 Cubs play at Busch Memorial Stadium for the first time and defeat the Cardinals 2-0

1966 June 26 Ron Santo extends his hitting streak to 26, but suffers a double fracture of his cheedkbone after getting hit by a pitch from the Mets, Jack Fisher. A bean ball war ensued after the incident.

1966 July 4 Ron Santo extends his hit streak to 27 and 28 after returning to the lineup after getting HBP on 6/26/66

1966 August 26 Cubs mgr, Leo Durocher rips phone out of dugout in Astordome after seeing an aminated display during the game making fun of him with various carttons.

1966 October 2 On final day of the season, Cubs tie their club record of 103 loesses for a season.

1965 April 30 Cubs play their first indoor game at Houston and lose to the Astros 4-3

1965 August 26 Cubs play their final game at old Busch stadium and lose to the Cardinals 7-4.

1965 September 2 Ernie Banks hits his 400th HR of his career off Curt Simmons of the Reds at Wrigley Field in a 5-3 Cubs win.
