Charlie Root, the winningest pitcher in Cubs History pitches a 10-inning shutout in 1930.  Ron Cey hits 2 HR's in 1986, the first is his 300th career home run.  Jake Arrieta pitches great games in both 2014 and 2016.

Charlie Root pitches a 10 inning shutout for a 1-0 victory and doubles and scores winning run.
  
May 3, 1952 
Cubs defeat the Dodgers 3-2 in 10 innings on Toby Atwell's walk-off single scoring Bob Addis.  Bob Rush pitches all 10 innings to earn the win.

May 3, 1960
At Wrigley Field, Frank Thomas hits 2 home runs and drives in 4 runs, but a late Cubs comeback isn't enough as the Phillies defeat the Cubs 10-9. 




May 3, 1961

Ernie Banks, perhaps the greatest hitter in Cubs History, hits 2 home runs, but it's not enough as the Giants defeat the Cubs 8-4 at Wrigley Field.  Orlando Cepeda homers for the Giants & Willie McCovey drives in 3 runs for the Giants.

Cubs play on Astroturf for the first time losing 10-2 to the Astros in the Houston Astrodome.
 
May 3, 1974
Burt Hooton pitches a solid 7 2/3 innings, but Ray Burris comes in and gives up a 3-run 9th inning home run as Reds take 5-4 lead, but Rick Monday comes back and wins the game for the Cubs with a 2-run walk-off home run against Don Gullett. Cubs win 6-5 at Wrigley Field.

Cubs defeat the Astros 9-0 as Ray Burris pitches a 5-hit complete game shutout.
 
May 3, 1986
Ron Cey hits 2 HR's for Cubs (the 300th and 301st of his career) and the Cubs score 4 runs in the 9th inning to take the lead and defeat the Giants 6-5 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

May 3, 1988
At Jack Murphy Stadium, the Cubs defeat the Padres 13-5.  Andre Dawson hits 2 home runs and drives in 5 runs.
 
May 3, 1996
Paul Wilson shuts down the Cubs for 8+ innings, but in the bottom of the ninth, Scott Bullett gets a bunt single, steals 2nd base and the Mets decide to walk Mark Grace intentionally for Sammy Sosa. Sosa sends Cubs fans home happy with a 3-run walk off home run to defeat the Mets 4-2.

May 3, 2002
At Dodger Stadium, the Cubs defeat the Dodgers 8-3. Fred McGriff hits 2 home runs and drove in 4 runs.

May 3, 2012
Happy birthday to both starting pitchers as Ryan Dempster & Homer Bailey pitch against each other on their respective birthdays.

Neither pitcher gets the win as the game goes into the 10th inning when Scott Rolen's sacrifice fly wins the game for the Reds

At Wrigley Field, Jake Arrieta and 5 Cubs relieves combine for a shutout as the Cubs defeat the Cardinals 3-0.  Anthony Rizzo & Junior Lake homer for the Cubs.  

May 3, 2016
In Pittsburgh, Jake Arrieta continues his historic streak, defeating the Pirates 7-1.  Arrieta pitches 7 scoreless innings, giving up just 2 hits and no runs in a 7-1 Cubs victory.  Dating back to end of 2015 season, Arrieta has now won 15 straight decisions.
