Jon Lieber throws a one-hit shutout against the Cincy Reds 3-0 at Wrigley. The shutout also breaks a consecutive game streak of the Reds without being shutout

On May 25, 2001, Kerry Wood follows up Lieber's 1-hitter with another 1-hit shutout.

Cubs Birthday

Jack Pfiester (1906-1911)

In his 8 year major league career, Pfiiester spent 6 of those with the Cubs, primarily during their championship years as the Cubs went to the World Series from 1906-1908 and 1910.  Pfiester led the league in ERA in the Cubs championship season of 1907 with a 1.15 ERA.  He won 20 games in 1906 and earned a complete game victory in the Cubs World Series championship in 1907.

May 24, 1942
In the 1st game of a doubleheader, the Cubs defeat the Pirates 7-5 in 10 innings.  Pitcher, Bill Lee drives in 2 runs and earns the win pitching all 11 innings.  Bill Nicholson scores on a wild pitch in the 10th and Peanuts Lowrey's RBI single adds an insurance run. 

May 24, 1957
Frank Ernaga first MLB game is a good one as he hits a HR and a triple in his first 2 at bats against future hall of Famer Warren Spahn  

May 24, 1967, game 2
At Wrigley Field, the Reds defeat Cubs 4-3 in game 1 of a doubleheader, however Cubs come back late in game 2 to get a walk-off 4-3 victory to earn a sweep.  Ernie Banks 8th inning RBI single ties the game 3-3 and Don Kessinger gets the walk-off hit,  driving in Adolfo Phillips with the winning run.
  
May 24, 1972
At Wrigley Field, the Cubs defeat the Mets 5-1.  Jose Cardenal homers twice and drives in 4 runs.  Billy Williams homers and Burt Hooton pitches a complete game, 5-hitter. 
  
May 24, 1978
A great comeback for the Cubs, trailing 4-2 into the bottom of the ninth, Greg Gross 2-run triple ties the score and Manny Trillo wins it for the Cubs with a walk-off 2-run home run in the 10th inning. 
 
May 24, 1984
In the 1st game of a doubleheader, Bob Dernier goes 5 for 5 with 2 runs scored, 2 stolen bases and an RBI  as the Cubs defeat the Braves 10-7 at Wrigley Field.

May 24, 1987
Braves pitcher, Charlie PUleo hits a home run against Rick Sutcliffe, however Sutcliffe pitches well, giving up only that run through 8 innings. Lee Smith blows the save in the ninth, but pitches a scoreless 10th inning. The Cubs win it 3-2 in the 12th inning when Andre Dawson drives in Bob Dernier with a walk-off RBI single.

May 24, 1994
Willie Banks pitches a 4-hit complete game shutout as the Cubs defeat the Dodgers and Orel Hersheiser 2-0.  

May 24, 2001

Cubs score 6 runs in the first inning and defeat the Cardinals 12-3 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.  Dexter Fowler has 3 hits, Jorge Soler reaches base 4 times, hits a home run and drives in 3 runs

Anthony Rizzo homers twice as the Cubs hold on for a 5-4 win over the Giants at Wrigley Field.
