May 12, 1969

Fergie Jenkins pitches a 5-hit shutout vs Padres at Wrigley.  From May 11 to May 16, Cubs pitchers give up just 2 runs that includes 4 complete game shutouts in 5 games.  Ken Holtzman on May 10 and May 16 and Dick Selma on May 13.  


The birthday of Hank Borowy

Hank Borowy came to Cubs late in 1945 and was a key player in the Cubs run to the NL pennant and their 1945 World Series appearance.  Borowy started Game 7 of the World Series after pitching in relief in Game 6. 

Borowy won 21 games in 1945 and was 11-2 with the Cubs with a 2.13 ERA.   He finished 6th in NL MVP voting in 1945. 

In his 4 seasons with the Cubs, Borowy did not come close to repeating his 1945 performance and ended his Cubs career with a 36-34 record with a 3.85 ERA.

Bill Lee follows up his first major league victory, a shutout over the Phillies with another shutout, this one against the Brooklyn Dodgers, 5-0 at Wrigley Field. 

May 12, 1935
Pitcher, Lou Warneke defeats Braves 4-1 and goes 4 for 4 at the plate.
 
May 12, 1941
At Crosley Field, the Cubs defeat the Reds 12-1.  Bill Lee pitches a complete game to earn the victory.  Both Stan Hack and Lou Stringer score 4 runs.  Dom Dellessandro drives in 3 runs and Bill Nicholson drives in 4.   
 
May 12, 1945
Dramatic 13-12 victory over Boston after Cubs were trailing 10-3. A six-run seventh and Bill Nicholson's 9th inning HR completed the comeback victory.  

May 12, 1953
Dee Fondy hits a 2-run walk off home run in the 11th inning as Cubs defeat Dodgers 6-4 at Wrigley Field.  
 
May 12, 1955
Sam Jones pitches a no-hitter, walking the first 3 batters in the ninth before striking out the last 3 to close out the no-hitter. Jones becomes the first African-American to throw a no-hitter in MLB history.
 
May 12, 1956
At Wrigley Field, Moose Moryn goes 3 for 5 with a double, home run & 3 RBI in a 14-10 victory over the Cardinals  

May 12, 1959
Roberto Clemente's long HR in Wrigley Field estimated to be 500 feet nearly hits the left side of the scoreboard in center field.
 
May 12, 1968
In game 1 of the doubleheader, Glenn Beckert's walk-off RBI single gives Cubs a 4-3 win over the Mets and Don Cardwell, who pitched a complete game for the Mets.  Rich Nye pitches a complete game to earn the win for the Cubs.  Beckert had 3 hits on the day, including a home run.

Cubs defeat the Padres 2-0.  Fergie Jenkins pitches a 5-hit complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts.  The shutout is the Cubs 2nd in a row after Ken Holtzman shuts out the Giants on 5/11/1969 (9-hit CG shutout).

On the same day that Ernie Banks hits his 500th home run, Ron Santo goes 2 for 5 in the game with a double and his RBI single in the 11th inning,   driving in Don Kessinger is the walk-off run as Cubs defeat the Braves 4-3 at Wrigley Field.

At Atlanta Stadium, the Cubs defeat the Braves 2-0.  Bill Hands pitches a 5-hit complete game shutout. 
 
May 12, 1974
Cubs blow an early 3-1 lead on Rusty Staub's 8th inning home run, but Cubs come back to defeat Mets and Tom Seaver, 3-2 on George Mitterwald's walk-off RBI single scoring Matt Alexander.

Rick Reuschel pitches 10 scoreless innings & Mike Garman gets the win for pitching a scoreless 11th innning.

Steve Swisher singles in Jerry Morales for the walk-off victory, 1-0 at Wrigley Field in 11 innings.

In 2nd game of a doubleheader, the Cubs defeat the Astros 2-0 on Ken Holtzman's 6-hit complete game shutout.  Holtzman also has 3 hits and scores one of the Cubs 2 runs.

Damon Berryhill's walk-off RBI double in the 10th inning scoring Mark Grace gives the Cubs a 2-1 victory over the Padres at Wrigley Field.
  
May 12, 1996
At Shae Stadium, the Cubs defeat the Mets 3-0 on Jim Bullinger's 2-hit complete game shutout.  Bullinger faces just 29 batters in the game. Ryne Sandberg & Sammy Sosa homer for the Cubs. 
 
May 12, 2003  
At Miller Park, the Cubs defeat the Brewers 11-5.  Cubs score 7 runs in the 4th inning.  Mark Grudzielanek & Moises Alou both get 4 hits.  Alou, Damien Miller & Troy O'Leary homer for the Cubs. 

At Wrigley Field, the Cubs score 6 runs in the 5th and 5 runs in the 6th to defeat the Padres 12-3. 

May 12, 2014
At St. Louis, the Cubs defeat the Cardinals 17-5. Starlin Castro goes 3 for 6
with a double, triple, run scored & 3 RBI.   

May 12, 2015
At Wrigley Field, the Cubs and Jake Arrieta defeat the Mets and Noah Syndergaard 6-1 at Wrigley Field.  Jake Arrieta pitches 8 strong innings, giving up just one run on 3 hits.  Arrieta strikes out 10 Mets and walks just 2 hitters.   
 
May 12, 2017  
Cubs defeat the Cardinals 3-2 as Willson Contreras homers twice and picks off his ex-teammate, Dexter Fowler at first base.  Eddie Butler pitched 6 scoreless innings.
