April 19

April 19 1938

April 19, 1942
This may be one of the best examples of a hard luck loser as Claude Passeau takes a no-hitter into the eight inning. In the ninth inning, the Reds score an unearned run to tie the game 1-1 and send the game into extra innings.

The game goes 14 innings and Passeau finishes all 14 innings, but gives up a 2nd Reds run in the top of the 14th inning and the Cubs lose 2-1.

The most amazing stat to me in this game is that the Reds committed 8 errors in this game, but not one of them helped result in a run scored for the Cubs.

April 19 1949
Opening Day at Wrigley Field.  Cubs lose 1-0 to the Pirates.  Rip Sewell pitches a complete game 8-hit shutout for the Pirates and Dutch Leonard pitches a complete game 5-hitter, giving up only a 9th inning unearned for the hard luck loss.

April 19, 1980
The Cubs trail 7-0 and 9-5 to the Mets at Wrigley Field, but come back and score 7 runs in the 8th inning to win 12-9.

Sixto Lezcano hits a home run, Ivan Dejesus drives in 2 runs with a single and Dave Kingman gets the big hit with a Grand Slam to finish the big inning for the Cubs.

For Kingman, it was his 2nd home run in the game and he drove in 6 runs on the day.  Ivan Dejesus also hit a home run and drove in 3 runs and Jerry Martin also hit a home run for the Cubs.

April 19, 1991
Trailing into the 9th inning at Pittsburgh, Andre Dawson gives the Cubs the lead with a 2-out grand slam, but Cubs closer, Dave Smith can't hold the lead and the Pirates score 2 to win it 5-4.

April 19, 1996

Braves 3-0 at Turner Field.

April 19, 2013
Jean Segura steals 2nd base and gets caught stealing 2nd base in the same inning.

April 19, 2016
Cubs beat the Cardinals 2-1 as Jason Hammel pitches a great game and drives in both Cubs runs.  The Cubs record goes to 11-3 for the year on their way to a World Series victory.

April 19, 2017
For the 2nd straight day, the Cubs trail early to the Brewers, the bullpen pitches very well (4 scoreless innings by Montgomery, Strop, Uehara & Wade Davis) but Cubs rally to win.  on 4/18 it was a 4-run 6th inning, on 4/19 it was more dramatic with 4 in the ninth as Addison Russell gets the walk-off 3-run home run for a 7-4 Cubs victory.
