At Wrigley Field, the Cardinals defeat the Cubs 6-3 in the Cubs home opener. 

April 17, 1923
At Wrigley Field, the Cubs lose to the Pirates 3-2 in the season opener. 

April 17, 1934 
At Wrigley Field, the Cubs shutout the Reds 6-0 in their season opener.  Lon Warneke strikes out 13 batters and pitches a 1-hit complete game shutout.  Adam Comorosky breaks up Warneke's no-hitter with one out in the 9th inning with a single. 

April 17, 1936 
Cubs lose to the Reds 12-3 in their home opener of the season. 

April 17, 1942 
Cubs begin their season on the road and defeat the Cardinals 5-4 in St. Louis. 

April 17, 1945 
At Wrigley Field, the Cubs win their season opener defeating the Cardinals 3-2 on a walk-off RBI single by Don Johnson.    

April 17, 1951

Dee Fondy hits a bases loaded triple in his first MLB at bat. Cubs defeat the Reds 8-3.

April 17, 1954
Cubs defeat the Cardinals 23-13.  The big inning was 5th, when the Cubs scored 10 to take a 22-10 lead in the game.  Randy Jackson went 4 for 5 with a walk, double, home run, 4 runs scored & 3 RBI.  Joe Garagiola was 3 for 3 with a double, 2 runs scored & 3 RBI. 

The Cardinals helped the Cubs quite a bit, committing 5 errors (2 in the 10-run 5th) and walked 12 Cub batters. 

April 17, 1956 
Cubs open the season in Millwaukee and lose the Braves 6-0.  Lew Burdette pitches a 5-hit complete game shutout.   

April 17, 1962

Ken Hubbs goes 5 for 5 with 5 singles, but Pirates defeat the Cubs 10 to 8. 
 
April 17, 1964 
In the Cubs home opener at Wrigley Field, 5 Cub home runs (2 by Billy Williams, 1 each by Lou Brock, Ron Santo & Billy Cowan help the Cubs defeat the Phillies 10-8. 

April 17, 1970
After Expos score 3 runs to take a 7-6 lead in the 9th inning, Willie Smith
ties the game with a double in bottom of 9th and Ron Santo wins the game with a walk-off bases loaded walk.  Cubs defeat Expos 8-7 at Wrigley Field.

April 17, 1974

Something tells me the wind was blowing out at Wrigley on this day as the Cubs beat the Pirates 18-9.  Catcher, George Mitterwald hits 3 home runs and drives in 8 runs.  Rick Monday, Jerry Morales & Bill Madlock hit home runs as well.  The next Cubs catcher to hit 3 home runs in one game is Dioneer Navaro in 2013.

April 17, 1976

Mike Schmidt helps the Phillies overcome a 12-1 deficit, hitting 4 home runs as the Phillies defeat the Cubs 18-16 in 10 innings.  

April 17, 1980 
At Wrigley Field, in the Cubs home opener, Dennis Lamp pitches a strong 8 innings as the Cubs defeat the Mets 4-1.  Carlos Lezcano & Mike Tyson homer for the Cubs. 
 
April 17 1987
At Wrigley Field, the Cubs defeat the Expos 7-0 behind Rick Sutcliffe's 4-hit complete game shutout.

Sutcliffe also drives in 3 runs and Jody Davis goes 4 for 4 with a double, home run, 3 runs scored & 2 RBI. 

April 17, 1990
At Shae Stadium in New York, the Cubs defeat the Mets 8-6 in 13 innings.  Lloyd McClendon hits a grand slam in the game.

April 17, 1996
Sammy Sosa hits (2) 2-run home runs, the 2nd a 10th inning walk-off as the Cubs defeat the Reds 8-6 at Wrigley Field. 
 
April 17, 2003
Cubs win 3 games in a 4 game series with the Reds and score at least 10 runs in each victory.  Reds won first game of series 11-3.  On this day, the Cubs defeated the Reds 16-3.  Sammy Sosa, Kerry Wood, Hee-Seop Choi & Mark Grudzielanek all homer for the Cubs.

April 17, 2009
Trailing 7-6 into the 8th inning, Alfonso Soriano's 2-run home run gives the Cubs an 8-7 win over the Cardinals at Wrigley Field. 

April 17, 2015
Kris Bryant makes his Cubs debut in a 5-4 loss to the Padres at Wrigley Field.  He went 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts.  He'll do better later!!
