2016 Cubs Convention-Day 2

Rock Star Rookies

My Saturday at Cubs Convention 2016 was busy attending 3 panel presentations and getting autographs (4 Cubs autographs total).

My favorite panel presentation was the one called "Rock Star Rookies". The 4 Cubs on the panel included: NL Rookie of the Year, Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber, Addison Russell & Javier Baez.

The Cubs success in 2016 was due, in large part, to the contributions of these and a few other young players for the Cubs.

Mentors for Young Cubs Players

The Cubs mentioned certain veterans on the team that helped them throughout the year. Kyle Schwarber gave credit to catcher, David Ross and pitcher, Jon Lester. Kris Bryant also mentioned David Ross and outfielder, Dexter Fowler. Javier Baez said that veteran Cub, Starlin Castro, who was traded to the Yankees this offseason helped him transition to the play in the major league.

Memories of the Cubs 2015

The conversation of their best memories of 2015, there was a certain theme as 3 of the 4 players mentioned big plays against the rival St. Louis Cardinals.

Kyle Schwarber hit his now famous "Schwarbomb" home run that landed and stayed on top of the right field scoreboard in Game 4 of the NLDS against the Cardinals. He mentioned how his lasting memory is hearing how loud the crowd was when he hit the home run.

Javier Baez's memory came in that same game against the Cardinals for his 3-run home run off John Lackey (who the Cubs signed away from the Cardinals this offseason). Addison

Russell's memory was not from this game, but it was a regular season game against the Cardinals. He made a spectacular diving catch and flipped to Baez for the final out of a Cubs victory.

Kris Bryant had a memorable home run when he hit the left field scoreboard and had one of the best lines of the convention when discusssing Schwarber's long home run he simply said "mine went further!".

Cubs Favorite Uniform Numbers

Addison Russell wore his new uniform number of 27 to this event. Russell wore #22 last year, but gave up the number to new Cubs outfielder, Jason Heyward. Wtihout going into detail, Russell mentioned that Heyward liked that numnber for personal reasons related to an ex-teammate. He likes the #27 because he is a big fan of NFL's running back, Eddie George.

Kris Bryant has his favorite number of #17. A number his dad wore when playing baseball.

Javier Baez can't wear his favorite number with the Cubs. It is #23, a number forever retired to honor Cubs great, Ryne Sandberg.
