Ouch, this one really hurts.  The Cubs set an MLB record for wins that still stands today (116-36) and face the crosstown rival, Chicago White Sox in the World Series.  Ed Ruelbach pitches a one-hitter in game 2, but the White Sox won this series 4 games to 2.

Cubs Win the World Series

Cubs pitching dominated this series, giving up just 6 runs to the Tigers in 5 games.  And 3 of those runs really didn't count as they were in game 1.  A game that ended in a tie after 12 innings with the score tied 3-3.

the Cubs do not lose a game in the Series and defeat the Detroit Tigers for a World Series championship.

Cubs Win the World Series

An argument could be made that the Cubs shouldn't have been in this World Series.  The Cubs won the pennant on the final day of the regular season with a victory over the New York Giants at Forbes Field.  The game was a replayed game from September 23rd when an apparant Giants victory was declared a tie after Fred Merkle did not touch second base as what should have been the winning run was scoring.

As in 1907, the Cubs are led by a strong pitching staff.  Orval Overall won the game 5 clincher with a shutout, his 2nd victory of the Series.  3 Finger Brown won 2 games.  Jack Pfeister & Ed Reulbach pitched well in the Series as well.

The Philadelphia A's defeat the Cubs 4 games to 1 to win the World Series.  A's pitcher, Jack Coombs gets 3 wins in the Series.

Babe Ruth & Carl Mays win all 4 games of the Series (yes, Babe Ruth as a pitcher) as the Red Sox defeat the Cubs 4 games to 2.  This Series was dominated by pitching.  In fact, the Cubs actually outscored the Red Sox 10-9 in the 6 game series.

Cubs management decided to play their home games in Comiskey Park rather than Weeghman Field (present day Wrigley Field) to take advantage of higher seating capacity.

The Philadelphia A's defeat the Cubs 4 games to 1 to win the World Series.  Howard Ehmhke, who pitched just 11 games in the regular season struck out 13 Cubs in the game 1 victory.

Game 4 was one of the more forgettable moments in Cubs history as the cubs blew an 8 run lead when the A's scored 10 runs in the 7th inning as the A's defeated the Cubs 10-8.

Than in game 5, the Cubs took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, but a 3-run 9th inning rally ends with a Bing Miller walk-off double as the A's defeat the Cubs for a World Series championship.

The Cubs had no answer for a strong Yankees lineup that included Babe Ruth & Lou Gerhrig.  Ruth's famous "called shot" occurred in game 3 of the World Series at Wrigley Field off Cubs pitcher, Charlie Root.

the Yankees sweep the Cubs 4 games to 0 to win a World Series championship.

The Tigers defeat the Cubs 4 games to 2 to win the World Series.  For the 2nd time in team history, the Cubs lose a World Series clincher on a walk-off hit.  In 1929, it was Bing Miller of the A's, in 1935, it was Goose Goslin's single driving in Mickey Cochrane to end the Cubs season.

Red Ruffing won 2 of the 4 victories for the Yankees as the Cubs lost the World Series to the Yankees 4 games to 0.

The 1945 World Series was a very exciting series that went all the way to 7 games. Off the field, the series is famous for "the curse of the billy goat" as William Ciannis was asked to leave the field with his goat.

Claude Passeau pitched a 1-hit shutout in game 3 at Briggs Stadium in Detroit.

Cubs manager, Charlie Grimm was creative with his pitching staff using one of their best pitchers, Hank Bowory to start game 5, pitche 4 scoreless relief innings in their extra inning game 6 victory, but Bowory struggled to pitch well coming back to start game 7 and gave up 3 runs witout recording an out as the Tigers won game 7 9-3 to win the World Series championship.
The victory came at Wrigley Field.  The first time a game 7 World Series has been played at Wrigley Field.

Cubs Win the World Series

The Cubs won 103 games in 2016, the best in all of MLB.

When the Indians won games 3 and 4 at Wrigley Field to take a 3 games to
1 lead in the World Series, it didn't look good for the Cubs.

Jon Lester pitched a great game in game 5 and Aroldis Chapman closed
out a 3-2 victory to send the Series back to Cleveland.

Addison Russell's grand slam in game 6 helped with a 9-3 victory to extend
the series to a decisive game 7 against Corey Kluber, who had already defeated the Cubs twice in the series.

Dexter Fowler led off game 7 with a home run, a David Ross home run, in his final major league game, gave the Cubs a 6-3 lead.  Aroldis Chapman wasn't able to hold this lead as Rajai Davis 2-run home run tied the game 6-6.  The game went to extra innings and after a short rain delay, the Cubs scored 2 runs in the top of the tenth, the lead run scoring on a Ben Zobrist double and Miguel Montero followed with an important insurance run.  the Indians scored one run in the bottom of the tenth inning, but Mike Montgomery got Michael Martinez to ground out to Kris Bryant and when Anthony Rizzo caught the ball, the Cubs ended their 108 year World Series drought with a World Series Championship.
