Cubs convention 2013 was a fun time. A new venue, lots of activity and getting the latest happenings in Cubs Nation
The Sheraton near Michigan avenue was a little inconvenient compared to the Hyatt which hosted past cubs conventions for over 20 years. Other than that, it was a nice facility and provided 4 floors to provide plenty of fun things for cub fans young and old to do.
Friday night-Opening Night
A nice touch for the opening ceremonies was having Cub players enter the ballroom on a red carpet giving high fives to the audience as they entered the room.
I played Cubs Bingo for the first time. Wayne Messmer called the numbers and entertained the crowd.
Cubs Convention is for the Kids
I liked how this year's convention seemed to emphasize having the younger kids play an important role in the 2013 Cubs Convention. The Friday night "Autograph Scavenger Hunt" with unannounced locations of Cubs Player's scattered throughout the venue was an interesting way to handle this. I saw 2 young kids excited about getting Kerry Wood's autograph.
Certain panels and autograph signings were designated as "For Kid's Only". The panels designed this way meant that only kids could ask questions of the players. I sat in for part of one of these with Chris Rusin, Brooks Raley, Darwin Barnery, Anthony Rizzo and David Dejesus. The panel was fun. One kid asked if the player's believed in the "Curse of the Goat" and Anthony Rizzo asked the kid right back "do you believe in the Curse". Big laugh from the crowd on that one!! Nice move, organizer's and Cubs staff for this call.
