Chicago Cubs

September 13, 2020

Congratulations to Alec Mills for pitching the Cubs 16th no-hitter in team history.  The last Cubs no-hitter was pitched by Jake Arrieta.  The Cubs have now also pitched both no-hitters in the history of Miller Park

in Milwaukee.  Carlos Zambrano pitched his no-hitter in Milwaukee against the Astros due to Hurricane Ike in Houston.

Cubs defeat the Brewers 12-0 to extend their lead over the Cardinals to 4 games and to 6 games over the Brewers in the NL Central.

One of the more exciting wins for the Cubs this year.  Cubs trail the Brewers 2-0 (on a Ryan Braun 2-run home run).  Kyle Hendricks pitches into the 8th inning, but is taken out of the game with 2 outs that prevented him from getting the win as the Cubs come back in the ninth against Brewers closer, Josh Hader.  Javier Baez got a single to right field and pinch-hitter, Anthony Rizzo also singled in front of the big hit from Jason Heyward, a 3-run home run to drive in the first runs of the entire series.  Ildemaro Vargas hits his first home run for the Cubs to give the Cubs a 4-2 win.

Craig Kimbrel picks up the save, the 348th of his MLB career.  This save moves him past former Cubs closer, Rany Myers into 12th place all-time in career saves.

Cubs win 2 out of 3 against the Reds at Wrigley Field with an 8-5 win.  Cubs put up 13 hits in the game and took the lead in the game with a 5-run 4th inning.  Willson Contreras was 4 for 4 with a walk, 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and an RBI.  Nico Hoerner goes 2 for 4 with a double, a run scored & 3 RBI.  Cameron Maybin goes 2 for 5 with a triple, 2 runs scored and an RBI.

Typically, when the Cubs and Reds play at Wrigley a lot of home runs are hit, but on this night with heavy winds blowing in, it was 2 triples (one by David Bote, the other by Javier Baez) that brings in all 3 Cubs runs.  That is enough as Alec Mills and 3 Cubs relievers combine on a 5-hit shutout.

Cubs pick up a half game on the Cardinals (split a doubleheader vs Twins) to extend their division lead to 3 full games.

Kyle Hendricks gets the Cubs a very big win in the last game of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals.  The win extends the Cubs lead in the division to 2.5 games and runs Hendricks career record against the Cardinals to 9-3.

Hendricks pitches 8 strong innings in a 5-1 Cubs win.

Yu Darvish takes a perfect game into the 6th inning until Matt Carpenter's home run.  A big win for the Cubs as they face the Cardinals ace, Jack Flaherty.  Willson Contreras goes 3 for 4 with a home run and all 4 Cubs RBI on the day.  Darvish ends up with 11 strikeouts in 7 innings and the Cubs pitching staff holds the Cardinals to 2 hits in a 4-1 Cubs win.
